Scream-Along. The Tour.

An immersive participatory installation. Free to present.

Content note — This exhibition contains depictions of fear and emotional distress. Not recommended for visitors under 16.

Scream-Along is a participatory art installation complemented by culturally specific community workshops.

Scream-Along takes place in a fabricated speakeasy-style karaoke bar. Visitors step into a dimly lit room with velvet-panelled walls and thick-pile carpet. A screen plays a montage of women screaming in films with the screams muted, leaving only the ambient noise or score.

Guests are invited to scream along with their favourite movie moments, or take a seat in the audience.

'The piece is fun... at first, but it's the contrast between the activity and the subject matter that I hope will make it memorable. I think it will spark lots of thoughts and discussions about sexism and its effects.' Saskia Takens-Milne

The work showcases the ubiquity of women's agony in film. It draws a direct line between our cultural obsession with on-screen violence against women and the epidemic of male violence against women in everyday life.

Visitor Participation and Responses

‘Funny then horrifying’

Visitor feedback, 2025

‘I felt by removing the sound of women screaming it seemed to make their screams even louder, as though we are watching the act helplessly, yet in solidarity and confronting violence against women together. Really beautiful and unnerving at the same time.’

Visitor feedback, 2025

‘It was a thought-provoking concept, I went from trying to recognise the films to being sad at the way the male gaze portrays women's fear in film.’

Visitor feedback, 2025

‘Great idea. Very powerful piece.’

Visitor feedback, 2025

‘Interesting venue. It works well and love the installation. Hard to watch at times.’

Visitor feedback, 2025

‘Very clever, very moving’

Visitor feedback, 2025

‘I thought it was an incredibly immersive and well put together installation, in which you really felt comfortable and excited to engage. At first, I felt embarrassed and slow to engage fully, but once I did, it felt like a release. It made we think about trivialisation of violence toward women in media.’‍

Visitor feedback, 2025

‘I think it’s a cool exhibition and the set decoration really added. It highlighted how women are so often mere victims whilst also being sexualized.’‍ ‍
